Radio AURA: “More than people, more than music”
The oldest student club at AUBG and arguably the oldest private radio station in Bulgaria, Radio AURA is a place for people with a shared passion for music. Here you join a creative community that will become your second family. Read our interview with the President of the club, Sofia Budeva, and learn more about AURA's events and activities.
How would you describe your club in 3 words?
I will use our slogan, which is “More than people, more than music.”
What is your club about?
Radio Aura is an online radio that consists of incredibly talented people who create content in different forms, and we also organize the best parties. We are a bunch of people trying to find a way to keep the radio going, and we have been doing so in the past 28 years. We just want to have fun, and Radio AURA allows us to show our love for music and gives us the freedom to be ourselves.
What kind of people are you looking for in your club?
We like to call it the AURA factor, and to be honest, after three years in the club, I still can’t describe it. It’s a specific vibe that we get when we see the person. We are looking for people that love music and can help us grow as a radio. Of course, we are looking for people with some particular skills and character traits, but that depends on the department. We have three departments – DJs/Hosts, Producers and Sales and people are part of them because we have seen their potential. If you have the vibe and the motivation, we can teach you pretty much everything.
What kind of events do you organize?
We organize mostly parties in different local clubs. Of course, due to the pandemic, we had to focus on other ways of entertainment. We also provide the music for almost every event on campus as we love to collaborate with all the clubs.
What is the meaning behind your club’s name?
Radio AURA comes from “American University Radio.” That’s the name they chose in 1992, a few months after they founded the radio.
How has being part of this club enhanced your AUBG experience?
From the first moment I stepped in the radio, I realized that this place and people will change my life. And they did. I love this radio with all my heart, and it’s always been about Radio AURA. I managed to meet all kinds of people, people that opened a lot of doors for me. I grew up and changed so much because of Radio AURA.
It managed to get me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to be a leader and take decisions, and that’s a huge responsibility. It has given me a reason to keep myself sane because I know that every Sunday, no matter how many papers I have, 35 people are waiting for me to start our meeting. Forget about exams; I will always remember having fun with those guys, putting up wallpapers, organizing parties, going to team buildings, every department, board, or club meeting…Being part of Radio AURA is the best thing that has happened to me in AUBG.
