International Week 2019 Honors Diversity at AUBG (Video)
The International Week at the American University in Bulgaria gathered together nearly 500 students, professors and guests from over 40 countries Feb. 18-23. For the ninth consecutive year, the event celebrated diversity on campus with discussions, lectures, competitions, workshops, and presentations of traditional dances, arts, and dishes.
“We should be proud of the diversity we have here,” AUBG President Steven Sullivan said at the week’s crowning event, the Dance and Taste Fest Feb. 23. “And we should celebrate it every day. But today, in particular, we should realize what a gift it is to live in such an environment.”
During the Dance and Taste Fest that took place at the ABF Sports Hall, the guests had a chance to try delicious foods and drinks prepared by students and professors coming from Palestine, Ukraine, Albania, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Bulgaria, Spain, Germany, Kosovo, USA, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.
Ever since AUBG opened doors 27 years ago, the events celebrating diversity on campus have become a tradition. Nearly half of AUBG’s current students are international and the university graduates, who receive both a Bulgarian and a U.S. diploma, go on to study and live in all corners of the globe.
In addition to the culinary festival, the International Week also featured a lecture by psychology professor Ronald Harvey, country presentations, a Dance and Language Workshop, and a Talent Show. The JMC students from the Writing for Media class worked on a project titled International [Press Freedom] Week that researched media freedom around the world.
