AUBG Daily – ‘Owls who aspire to inspire’
Do you dream of becoming a journalist one day? Or do you simply want to develop your writing and communication skills? Either way, AUBG Daily is the place for you! Here you will meet ambitious and creative people who will pass to you their knowledge and experience and turn you into the next brilliant owl in their team. Take a look at our interview with the Presidents of AUBG Daily, Yoanna Dimitrova and Steliyana Yordanova and see what makes them so passionate about the club.
How would you describe your club in 3 words?
Owls who aspire to inspire.
What is your club about?
The official statement here would be: “The only independent student-run online and print media on campus.” However, the truth is AUBG Daily has never been just a newspaper, a website with news, articles, or anything like that. Our club is about free speech, free media, and free society. We believe these are the pillars for a thriving and democratic community. Last but not least, Daily is about forging friendships and exploring the world together. We stumble, we fall, we get back up, we learn together. And we owl the news!
What kind of people are you looking for in your club?
Curious and persistent. Truth be told, we do not have a particular type of people we are looking for (we are actually looking for owls!). We need to click with the people who want to join. Contrary to popular belief, we do not only look for journalism majors. We have the general departments that other clubs have – marketing, sponsorship, social media, etc. We do, however, have a team of reporters, editors, photographers, videographers. Briefly put, we are looking for people who are brave enough to take on challenges and curious enough to explore and look for adventures.
What kind of events do you organize?
Our major event last year was “A Glimpse into Media” and it was a media summit with guests from all over the world. We had a F1 photographer, a BBC news team producer, TV hosts, a Pulitzer prize winner, etc. We have prepared new and exciting events for this year that will comply with the health regulations and safety protocols. Even if AUBG switches to online education, we will keep creating. After all, our special Senior Issue was assembled entirely online. Just a little spoiler: we might or might not have an article competition with a really cool prize.
What is the meaning behind your club’s name?
AUBG Daily means we post and share news daily. However, recently we have focused more on unbreaking news. This is a fairly new term and is about better-quality journalism. Research over speed. We are frank and sincere to our readers. We explore what is happening with them. If there is something we do not know about, we can admit it and we believe this is the best way to produce content and share it with people. We are doing this for others, not specifically for us. The real meaning behind our name lies in our motto – Owl the news!
How has being part of this club enhanced your AUBG experience?
Being a part of AUBG Daily helped me grow immensely. I feel more confident when talking in front of big crowds. It helped me explore a world that was always there, but I never really noticed much. Assembling a newspaper, a printed newspaper, was something I never thought I would do in 2020. We have this cozy atmosphere inside the club that helps us create and work together without unnecessary drama and tension that usually occur in newsrooms and media outlets. What this club gave me was true, genuine experience and unaltered taste of real life. I love it!
