Iliyana Zaharieva (EMBA ’14), Agile Project Manager at Endava: ‘I value the big picture perspective’
Meet Iliyana Zaharieva – a successful professional in the field of project management and an AUBG EMBA alumna. In this interview, she tells more about the challenging but rewarding EMBA journey and her personal and professional development upon graduation.
How did your career start? How has it progressed since?
My career started in 2005 and it has always been in the area of project management, with different levels of responsibilities and in various industries. I have spent many years in the area of European projects, but my heart has always been in the transfer of innovation elements, which in one way or another are technologies and the impact they have on business endeavors.
I've been in the role of project freelance consultant, digital success manager and later on co-founder of a (Salesforce.com partner) start-up.
I have also been volunteering a lot and am part of the Advisory Board of PMI Bulgaria Chapter.
For the past four years, I've been part of Endava. I've changed roles and responsibilities (with an Interim Head of Project management role at some point) and predominantly in the role of Agile Project manager.
I think I am well settled in this area now, and the AUBG Executive MBA knowledge has significantly contributed to my confidence and helped me speak the language of business and get along well with all profiles of people, no matter the rank.
Why did you decide to enroll at the AUBG EMBA Program? In what ways has the EMBA enhanced your personal and professional experience?
It was the right moment for me, as I was already in a leadership role and I wanted to get the knowledge to build on theory and be sure I am doing the things right. So I applied and took advantage of the opportunity with great enthusiasm.
What did you find most valuable about the program? What was most challenging?
The program is very well-structured, you learn the depths with case studies and through projects which helps you absorb the theory better through practice.
What was most challenging for me was the time away and apart from my family and the intensity of the process. I enjoy learning so the material itself was not an issue, once you find the time.
Beyond the academics, what role does the program play in building friendships and professional connections? Are you still in touch and collaborating with other AUBG alumni, and in what ways?
I made friends, some of them stayed for life. I've learnt a lot about myself during the process of studying and self-discovery through feedback. I know that I have acquaintances in all sectors and it has proved beneficial at different points of life so far. I am also always open to give support back.
What were some of your favorite classes at the program, and why?
Strategy, leadership and human resources. I value the big picture perspective and am very much a people - oriented type of leader.
What would you advice a person who is considering to enroll in the program?
Make sure you have your family well-prepared on what to expect - you will be missing for quite a lot…
You have to be able to read fast. A meta-reading prep class or other document scanning techniques can help a million.
You will have to read and absorb many big documents with new information day after day… but this skill will surely pay off.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
The free time itself. Kids, family, outdoor activities and of course - reading.
